Field development costs are reduced and hydrocarbon recovery is maximized when well positions and paths leave no significant "untapped" reservoir compartments. Where oil quality is an issue, costs are further reduced when completion intervals are chosen that maximize the oil or gas quality while minimizing the number of production tests needed to select completion interval(s). By optimizing well placement and reducing production tests, oil geochemistry (oil fingerprinting) data can substantially reduce development costs while maximizing hydrocarbon recovery.
